Fashion’s current recession indicators are everywhere. But they weren’t on the runway at Otis College’s 2025 student fashion show.
This year’s design class didn’t reference economic downturn signifiers like minimalism, tailored suiting, “quiet luxury” and neutral colors. Instead, they fully embraced maximalism, bold hues, exaggerated proportions and dramatic silhouettes. In other words, if the next gen of fashion talent is concerned about the industry’s uncertainty, it didn’t show up in their design output.
Otis College’s 2025 cohort of mentors — leading industry professionals who work with junior and senior students on collections throughout the academic year — surely also helped steer designers in the right direction.
For instance, Vfiles CEO Leonardo Lawson tasked students to design for the “jetsetter executive,” while Agolde Design Director Jack Burns challenged students to create “a collection of elevated modern sportswear.” Designer Jonathan Cohen had pupils make “a collection of prints inspired by ‘Punk Impressionism’ for a sportswear line.” Other mentors included designers from RTA, Cupshe and Activision Blizzard.
