Cowboys, Giants among potential landing spots?

CBS Sports named three potential landing spots for Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts

The Atlanta Falcons are not desperate to trade tight end Kyle Pitts, but multiple teams have reportedly reached out to check on the former top-five pick’s availability. While the Falcons want to see what Pitts can do with Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback this season, the young tight end is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Atlanta would need at least a Day 2 draft pick to consider trading Pitts. That seems unlikely due to the tight end’s contract status, but it shouldn’t be ruled out, either.

CBS Sports suggested three potential landing spots for Pitts, including two NFC teams and one in the AFC. First on the list was the Dallas Cowboys. Even though the team already traded for former Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, Pitts would give Dallas another weapon for Dak Prescott and company.

“The Cowboys could use a more dynamic complement to holdover Jake Ferguson at tight end, and they’ve still got $30 million to spare,” wrote CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin. “As a bonus, Micah Parsons’ brother suggested this deal for Dallas not long ago.”

Next up, Benjamin suggested the Jacksonville Jaguars. Pitts played his college ball at Florida and the Jaguars need a new tight end after releasing Evan Engram. With former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Cohen taking over as the head coach in Jacksonville, the team could use another offensive spark.

“Pitts’ positional versatility could give the Jaguars a new-look “big three” along with Brian Thomas Jr., increasing Lawrence’s odds of a turnaround,” explained Benjamin.

The New York Giants were the last team mentioned on CBS Sports’ list. While Pitts could certainly help in New York, it wouldn’t be a great situation for the fifth-year tight end. The Giants have quarterback concerns, with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston entering an awkward situation with a rookie quarterback.

Benjamin felt Pitts would be a good eventual target for first-round pick Jaxon Dart, who isn’t expected to start for the team this season:

“Head coach Brian Daboll would surely be OK pairing the big man with Malik Nabers, giving Russell Wilson an added safety valve for an offense sorely lacking secondary playmakers over the last few years. Assuming this link-up would extend beyond 2025, Pitts’ arrival would also bode well for Jaxson Dart, the presumptive quarterback of the future.”

Pitts, 24, has a 1,000-yard season under his belt, but his production has declined ever since. Some of this had to do with a severe knee injury that he suffered in his second season, while the inconsistent quarterback play didn’t do Pitts any favors.

One major downside of trading Pitts would be that it leaves the Falcons without a starting tight end. Taking away a weapon from Penix wouldn’t benefit the team this season. Plus, moving Pitts would seem to go against the team’s win-now strategy in the 2025 NFL draft.

The fifth-year tight end is due $10.8 million in 2025, the final year of his rookie deal.
