Barcelona captain angry with the club’s silence ahead of possible exit

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is angry with how the club has handled recent developments surrounding the goalkeeping position.

As revealed by SPORT, the arrival of Joan Garcia from Espanyol and the possible renewal of Wojciech Szczesny have created major uncertainty around Ter Stegen’s role next season.

The German international, who has a contract with the club until 2028, confirmed that nobody from the Barça board has contacted him regarding a potential exit.

While he has expressed his intention to stay at Barcelona, he is also waiting for a direct conversation with Hansi Flick to understand the club’s plans moving forward.

Everyone wants clarity

Though Ter Stegen has kept quiet publicly, sources suggest he is frustrated with the situation.

Behind the scenes, Barcelona’s management believes that keeping both Garcia and Ter Stegen does not make financial or sporting sense. This is because Garcia has been guaranteed the starting role, which puts Ter Stegen in a difficult position.

The club’s internal thinking is that a departure from Ter Stegen would ease their financial burden.

His salary is among the highest in the squad, and moving him on would free up crucial funds, especially important given Barcelona’s ongoing financial challenges.

However, the club insists they will not force him out. The decision on the starting goalkeeper will rest entirely with Flick.

Exit very much likely

Despite his current position of staying, Ter Stegen is believed to be open to leaving if it becomes clear he will not be the first choice.

With the World Cup on the horizon next summer, regular playing time is a priority. Still, he will not leave easily.

Any exit would involve negotiating the large contract he signed, which includes deferred payments agreed to during the COVID-19 pandemic under former president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

As it stands, all eyes are on the upcoming conversation between Flick and Ter Stegen, one that could determine the goalkeeper’s future at the club.
