Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey exceeded expectations in his impressive 2024 rookie campaign. Now, the expectation is that he continues to ascend to the next level.
Pro Football Focus ranked the top 32 wideouts in the NFL heading into 2025, and McConkey found himself ranked 22nd. PFF’s Trevor Sikkema had nothing but praise for the former Georgia product, who was the 34th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
“McConkey made a strong impression in 2024, proving that size isn’t prerequisite for impact at the NFL level. He earned an 85.0 receiving grade and ranked in the 90th percentile in separation rate against single coverage, a clear sign defenders can’t afoord to take him lightly.”
There’s reason to think he could be even better in Year 2 in 2025. He will have better talent around him, including rookie second-round wideout Tre Harris, as well as the expectation of an improved running game.
Defenses won’t be able to focus on McConkey nearly as much as they did in 2024 when he was essentially Justin Herbert’s only reliable weapon. He finished with the fourth-most receiving yards amongst rookies last season in an otherwise impressive wide receiver class.
McConkey had over 400 yards more than the next Charger, Quentin Johnston. His seven receiving touchdowns ranked second on the team as well. At this point, he is already one of the most valuable players on the Chargers.
To no surprise, McConkey was the only Chargers wideout that made PFF’s list. The second-year star was slotted above notable names like D.K. Metcalf, Deebo Samuel Sr., Marvin Harrison Jr., and Chris Olave.
