L’Oréal Group to acquire Medik8
L’Oréal Group has acquired a majority stake in British skin-care brand Medik8. European private equity firm, Inflexion, remains a minority shareholder, and brand founder Elliot Isaacs will stay on the board. While the company has not shared the financial deal, WWD reported the acquisition was valued at around €1 billion. “We share a strong belief in Medik8’s global potential and are excited to embark on this journey together, to build a powerful and impactful brand presence worldwide,” Cyril Chapuy, president of L’Oréal Luxe, said in a statement. {L’Oréal Group}
Chanel launches a new recycling platform
Chanel is launching Nevold, a new circularity platform that recycles and recreates materials from unused fabrics, leftover textiles or unsold products, at scale. The goal is to grow Nevold into a full B2B service that offers systemized circular solutions for the entire industry. The program also aims to develop these solutions at an affordable production price that can compete with (and, eventually, replace) the industry-used plastics. Nevold will operate as a separate Chanel entity (not tied to its haute couture or ready-to-wear divisions), with its own resources, acquisitions and goals. {WWD/paywalled}
Shein and Reliance to expand Indian suppliers
Shein and its partner Reliance Retail plan to increase their Indian suppliers from 150 to 1,000 within the year and sell Indian-made clothes to Shein’s top global markets. Even with the broadened supply source, Shein hopes to keep its products at its infamous low cost. While the fast fashion retailer reportedly planned the expansion before the U.S.-China trade war, the unstable economic climate has escalated the process and reinforced its strategy to diversify production hubs. Reliance will help new suppliers with fabric sourcing and importing the necessary machinery. {Reuters}
