Borussia Dortmund reject Chelsea’s €50m offer for Jamie Gittens – sources

Chelsea have had a €50 million ($57.1m) follow-up offer for winger Jamie Gittens rejected by Borussia Dortmund winger, sources told ESPN, with the Premier League club also walking away from negotiations to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

The west London club are keen to strengthen their attacking options this summer and had already had an offer for Gittens of around €35.5m rejected by the Bundesliga side.

The 20-year-old is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, sources said. and Chelsea need to move quickly to ensure he will be eligible to compete in the Club World Cup. The deadline for registration is Tuesday.

Gittens has made 48 appearances for Dortmund this season in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and registering five assists.

He is a former Manchester City youth team player and they hold a clause guaranteeing them 10% of his next transfer fee as part of the deal which took him to Germany in 2020.

Maignan, though, will not be arriving at Chelsea for the Club World Cup. Enzo Maresca’s side had been encouraged to make a move for the 29-year-old after learning he was open to a move to Stamford Bridge and could be available for a cut-price fee given he has just one year remaining on his contract.

However, sources said that Milan were demanding as much as €30 million ($34m) for the France international, a price Chelsea were reluctant to meet given the short length left on his existing deal.

Sources added that while the club are open to signing a new goalkeeper, it is not a position they are prioritising given they have five senior goalkeepers on their books.
