Nike‘s digital-oriented .Swoosh line has garnered ample attention this year with intentionally dirty Air Force 1s and a trio of Air Max 1s tied to video games, including a tribute to the beloved N64 game “Goldeneye 007,” and now it’s taking on a phenomenon familiar to anyone who plays video games: rage quitting.
The Nike .Swoosh Total 90 3 Rage Quit sees the soccer lifestyle hit devoted to the moment when frustration wins out and you can no longer stand to continue playing. Dressed in the black and green most would associate with Xbox, the sneaker features a cracked graphic on its medial Total 90 logo. The insole repeats the mark alongside with a text window reading, “Your opponent has quit the match.” Green portions of the upper, placed at the tongue and medial side, take on a metallic sheen.
In a teaser for the Total 90 3 on its Instagram page, .Swoosh wrote: “Own your emotions. Quit the rage.”
The Total 90 3 was relaunched this year as a sneaker retooling the iconic soccer cleat — or football boot — from 2004. It’s been Nike’s biggest hit so far in the exploding lifestyle soccer market for sneakers, selling out in its initial run of colorways in March.
With the Club World Cup just days away and the World Cup coming next year, Nike has much more up its sleeve to capitalize on the sports’ incursion on sneakers. The company has teased the Cryoshot series, which will include new versions of the Ronaldo’s Mercurial R9 and Ronaldinho’s Tiempo R10 cleats with translucent covers around their studs for everyday wear. Patta cofounder Guillaume “Gee” Schmidt also revealed his own brand’s collaboration on the Cryoshot Mercurial.
Adidas, which already had a leg up on the soccer movement after years of favor for the Samba and Gazelle, has shifted focus this year to a wider range of models. A Kith collaboration highlighted the Predator Mania, Koresco National and Predator Megaride. Riding the #bootsonlysummer TikTok trend, Adidas has also seen the leak of its F50 boot with a similar cleat shroud to Nike’s.
Release details are still to come for the Nike .Swoosh Total 90 3 Rage Quit, but it will likely hit the Snkrs app soon. Pricing is set at $115, and WWD sister publication Footwear News will keep you up to date as any new information becomes available.
