Unexpected contender emerges for Patriots’ left guard position

New England Patriots second-year offensive tackle Caedan Wallace was seen taking reps at guard during minicamp.

It’s a serious change for a player some expected to be the starting left tackle when he was initially drafted by the Patriots. The team is leaving no stone unturned in their search for a reliable starting left guard, and they could make considerations for the former Penn State standout.

Wallace has shown versatility along the offensive front in his ability to play at both tackle positions. However, some have wondered if he would make for a better guard than tackle at the next level. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel appears determined to find out.

Veteran guard Wes Schweitzer, who was expected to compete for the starting job, was placed on the reserve/retired list. That has created an opening for someone else to jump into the competition. Could that player end up being Wallace?

It’s something to keep an eye on in training camp to see if the Patriots continue to test him in that position. Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed posted on social media, “Cole Strange is looking like the top option at LG right now, though there’s a lot of time before the season starts for Tyrese Robinson, Caedan Wallace, Layden Robinson and Jared Wilson to get a shot.”

As Kyed mentioned, Cole Strange is likely the top option as of right now. However, there’s always a chance Wallace could push him if the Patriots give him a real look at guard. It could be the one move at this point that finally gets him on the field.
