NFL insider with latest update on Colts QB

Ian Rapoport provided the latest update on the shoulder of Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson and his potential availability for training camp.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided the latest update on the shoulder of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and his potential availability for training camp.

“As far as Anthony Richardson, from what I understand,” Rapoport said, “obviously you mentioned it, had a right shoulder injury, somewhat similar injury to what he had before. Got it checked out, got a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, one of the more respected voices in the medical community in the NFL, just rest and recuperation. Really just rest and rehab. No surgery. He is expected to be fine by training camp.

“This is a very good thing for the Colts because what they want is health and a real competition at quarterback, and it sounds like they’ll get that.”

Richardson experienced shoulder pain early on in OTAs. Upon further evaluation, it was determined that the pain was related to the same AC joint that he injured during his rookie season.

The Colts then shut Richardson down for the remainder of OTAs as well as minicamp, and he also got another opinion from Neal ElAttrache, who performed the original surgery.

Rapoport is the latest insider to report that Richardson should be ready to go by training camp, which for the Colts begins on July 22nd. However, as Shane Steichen has said, there will have to be a ramp-up period for Richardson upon his return. So even if he is on the practice field on Day 1, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be a full go.

With Richardson sidelined, Daniel Jones has taken all of the first-team reps, and Steichen said he’s been “very pleased” with his performance.

The quarterback competition certainly won’t be determined by what happened in OTAs and minicamp, but when Richardson does return, he’ll have to make up ground quickly with him having fewer reps and opportunities overall.
