Whether you’re prepping for summer vacation or simply refreshing your warm-weather wardrobe, there’s quite a range of new and familiar shoe trends to choose from these days. From waterproof options to runway-inspired silhouettes, we took a look at the data to see what’s heating up in the footwear department this summer.
According to Google Trends, shopping searches for “jelly sandals” are at an all-time high this quarter — especially for “jelly flats”, “jelly flip-flops” and “jelly Fisherman sandals.” Jelly net flats — à la The Row’s viral pair — are also super popular right now, with countless brands taking a stab at the trend.
Fishermans are also trending in their own right: Search interest for “fisherman sandals” and “platform fisherman sandals” doubled over the past month, with search interest spiking consistently each May over the past three years, making these a great investment. Similarly, according to Google, searches for “boat shoes” spike every June and hit an all-time high last summer. But, over the past month, shoppers have been avidly seeking “brown,” “leather” and “lug sole” versions specifically, as a wider range of options for this classic shoe style have emerged.
In perhaps the most surprising piece of data, “gladiator sandals” was the top-trending silhouette for adults searched in May. That could be a nod to the imminent boho revival we’re seeing from the likes of Isabel Marant and Chloé, but the strappy style can be found in a range of aesthetics, from punk-rock (courtesy of Marc Jacobs’ summer version of its Kiki boot) to more of a practical, all-terrain vibe (via Chaco’s or Teja’s, for example).
Ballet flats have also returned with a vengeance over the past couple of years. Under that umbrella, breathable styles made of open-knits, be it crocheted cotton or braided leather, in neutral tones are the versatile option that will go with every summer ensemble.
Also of note, “hybrid sneakers” are gaining popularity, from girlish “ballerina” versions to “sneaker mules” (like Miu Miu’s) that are easy to slip on.
Ahead, we shopped out these leading trends from some of our favorite designers and brands at a range of price points. No matter where your kicks are taking you this summer, you’ll be well-heeled in any of these.
