Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples that give us hope for our own romantic futures and trying to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.
While the number 45 may conjure unwanted flashbacks to President Donald Trump’s first term for some, I prefer to think of it in a much friendlier context: 45 years is how long celebrated actor, singer, and all-around angel Mandy Patinkin has been married to his wife, actress and writer Kathryn Grody. (And, really, how excellent is it that she kept her name—which, yes, is unfortunately an ’80s-era synonym for “gross”—instead of changing it to Patinkin? I love a woman who knows her mind!)
Patinkin and Grody are the proud parents of two adult sons, Isaac and Gideon, and now that both halves of this iconic couple are in their 70s (Patinkin is 72, Grody is 78), they have most definitely earned their right to rest on their laurels and be given wildly preferential treatment at every lunch bistro in LA. Whether or not this is happening—and I hope to God it is—the Patinkin-Grodys are clearly fond of looking back at their early days as a couple, as Grody proved this week in a Page Six interview.
“I mean, this is a guy, on our very first date, who told me he was going to marry me,” Grody told the outlet, adding: “And I thought he was nuts because I didn’t believe in marriage.” Iconique!
“I remember saying, ‘You know, [Mandy], I’m really enjoying this part in love before we start hurting each other,” Grody continued. “He looked at me and was five, six years younger than me and he said, ‘What do you mean? I love you! I’m never going to hurt you.’”
Obviously, it’s almost impossible for two people (even two people who are deeply in love!) to never hurt one another, but if there’s anyone I trust to keep a woman’s heart safe and sound over almost five consecutive decades, it’s Mandy Patinkin.
But my overwhelming love for the Patinkin-Grodys really extends to their entire family unit, as their son Gideon started posting videos of his parents to TikTok during the early days of the COVID pandemic—and, naturally, the snippets of Patinkin and Grody’s at-home life soon went viral. As Gideon told NPR: “I really just started doing it as a kind of family archive. And then to our great surprise, people kept being interested in us just kind of hanging around and these two lunatics being themselves.” (On that note, I’m obsessed with Patinkin thinking the famous Beyoncé lyric goes, “If you like it then you should have put a hat on it.”)
