Adam Schefter offers concerning take on Trey Hendrickson, Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals appeared to get some good news this week when a report said lines of communication opened back up with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson.

That report seemed to suggest things were on the right, early track to a resolution and perhaps even hinted both sides wanted to resolve things before training camp to avoid distractions and missed time.

Alas, here comes Adam Schefter with a different type of commentary.

“The Bengals would like a shorter deal. Hendrickson would like a longer deal. And they can’t even find common ground on the length of the deal right now,” Schefter said on Pat McAfee’s show.

It’s not abundantly clear if Schefter was reporting new information here, as the Bengals preferring a shorter-team deal while the 30-year-old Hendrickson very obviously wants longer-term security has been openly said by the latter’s camp.

Still, it’s a small update from an insider, so notable.

Hendrickson appeared at a random practice earlier this summer and gave an interview about his disappointment with the lack of communication from the Bengals front office. The team had previously granted him permission to seek a trade that never happened and he remains under contract for at least one more season, with the franchise willing to again call his bluff about a holdout.

While the concerns about communication appear to be over at least, the very obvious gap in preferred contract length seems to be the main hurdle.
