- PayPal will become the official payment platform for Big 12 and Big Ten athletes’ revenue-sharing payments.
- The deal is reportedly worth nearly $100 million over five years, providing each Big 12 school with about $1 million annually.
PayPal announced partnerships with both the Big 12 Conference and the Big Ten Conference on June 26 to become their official platform for distributing revenue-sharing payments to athletes.
According to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger and CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello, the deal is worth nearly $100 million over five years. The Big 12 opted not to pursue selling its naming rights, but Dellenger added the deal is significant in that each member school will earn around $1 million annually.
Additionally, Venmo will serve as the presenting partner of the Big Ten Rivalry Series — spanning football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball — and will be an official partner for the Big 12’s championship events starting this season.
Beginning July 1, under the terms of the House vs. NCAA settlement signed earlier this month by Judge Claudia Wilken, schools will be able to pay their athletes directly — with UCF expected to allocate roughly 75% of the $20.5 million cap towards its football program.
“We’re proud to help lead this transformation in college athletics by making it easier and faster for student-athletes to receive funds and continue to bring trusted and innovative commerce solutions to the heart of campus life,” PayPal President and CEO Alex Chriss said in a statement. “From receiving institutional payments to making everyday purchases, we’re helping student-athletes, families and schools engage in new ways that are modern, secure and built for the future.”
Chriss told CBS Sports that PayPal has entered discussions with other conferences, in addition to the Big 12 and the Big Ten, to become their revenue-share payment partners.
“We are thrilled to enter into this landmark partnership with PayPal and Venmo,” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said. “As we embark on a new era of college athletics, aligning with a global leader like PayPal will unlock a wealth of opportunities for the Big 12. This partnership will also empower our student-athletes to receive payments through a secure, trusted platform they already know and use.”
UCF has not commented publicly with regards to the conference’s deal with PayPal and Venmo.
