Takeaways from Dane Brugler’s new mock draft

NFL draft writer Dan Brugler of The Athletic put out a new seven-round mock draft this week, and we have pored over all the picks. The 2025 NFL draft is just a week away, and Brugler has been incredibly thorough with his picks. We decided to offer up some takeaways that include the best and worst picks from each of the first three rounds.

Best pick of the first round

The Buffalo Bills selected former Georgia safety Malaki Starks with the No. 30 overall pick. We have Starks in our top five defensive prospects in the entire draft so getting him at 30 is a huge steal.

Worst pick of the first round

There’s no standout pick here that we just can’t understand but the one pick that stands out as being too soon for us is former Texas A&M EDGE Shemar Stewart at No. 11 to the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins need help on the offensive line badly and we aren’t as high on Stewart as others.

Best pick of the second round

The Seahawks traded wide receiver DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for the No. 52 overall pick. Seattle absolutely made the most of the pick with former Tennessee EDGE James Pearce Jr. Pearce is a freakish athlete and so explosive off the edge, there’s no reason he falls this far.

Worst pick of the second round

Sticking with edge rushers, the Denver Broncos passing on Pearce to select Oregon’s Jordan Burch one pick before Seattle is a real head scratcher.

Best pick of the third round

This one isn’t just the best pick of the third round but probably the best pick of the first three rounds. The Las Vegas Raiders landing Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison with the No. 68 overall pick is crazy. He’s going to be a 10-year NFL starter and outplay plenty of guys taken before him.

Worst pick of the third round

We are usually quick to praise the Ravens for their ability to draft defensive players but taking Louisville’s Ashton Gillotte at No. 91 is a miss. Especially with Princely Umanmielen and Sai’Vion Jones still on the board and going just a few picks later.
