The Jacksonville Jaguars’ Bhayshul Tuten was recently ranked among the rookie running backs that will have the biggest impact this season.
Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports recently put together his list of which first-year running backs he believes will be the most productive, and coming in at No. 5 was Tuten.
“Tuten was my No. 2 back in the 2025 class — I adored his blend of breakaway speed, lateral bounce, and contact balance,” Trapasso notes. “I really don’t know why he was a fourth-round pick. Maybe it was the nine fumbles in two seasons at Virginia Tech.”
At the top of Trapasso’s list was Ashton Jeanty, followed by TreVeyon Henderson, RJ Harvey, and Omarion Hampton.
Trapasso also adds that with Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter at wide receiver, “Tuten should receive ample carries with light boxes,” that his speed and playmaking abilities will be able to exploit.
What does Bhayshul Tuten add to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offense?
Tuten was the fastest running back at the NFL combine, running a 4.32-second 40, and with that speed came a lot of big plays at Virginia Tech. In 2024, Tuten averaged 6.3 yards per carry and ranked highly in missed tackles forced and average yards after contact, according to PFF’s metrics.
Tuten is competing for playing time with Travis Etienne, Tank Bigsby, and fellow rookie LeQuint Allen. I anticipate Etienne, Bigsby, and Tuten all having defined roles, but how that exactly shakes out from a playing time perspective remains to be seen.
Looking at the 2024 Tampa Bay offense under Coen, having a strong and productive running game is essential to the overall success of this unit.
Like any incoming rookie, Tuten is navigating the learning curve that comes with playing in the NFL, particularly learning a new offensive scheme and one that comes with a robust playbook under Liam Coen.
“I think he’s done a solid job,” Liam Coen said during minicamp. “He needs a lot more work, which all those guys do. A lot of the running backs, man, it’s a huge jump from protection systems in college to the pros and that’s usually where you see the tempo slowing down for them. Like playing slower, thinking more, when pass pro starts to kind of bog the mind. Then let’s call it, you got five different tracks of footwork for a running back to learn.
Coen continued: “We’re trying to teach the why and sometimes that can slow a back down in this phase, especially when it’s tag, and people are in awkward positions when you’re trying to stick your foot in the ground to run vertical to run through them, you can’t. It’s awkward.”
