USA’s Emma Navarro falls to 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the round of 16 at Wimbledon

Emma Navarro’s Wimbledon journey ended in the Round of 16 on Monday after losing to Mirra Andreeva in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. USA’s Navarro entered the match as the No. 10-seeded player on the women’s side, while her Russian counterpart was seeded No. 7.

Andreeva, on both sets, built an early lead which she retained as Navarro failed to cut down the deficit before getting swept.

At 18, Andreeva is making her first Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance in her third year of participating in the tournament. After her win, the teenager raved about playing in front of tennis legend Roger Federer, who was in attendance in the Royal Box.

“I was super nervous before playing for the first time on the center court,” Andreeva said. “I really tried my best to not look over there in the box because I knew that as soon as I would look there, I would just completely lose my focus.

“When I saw [Federer], I got really, really nervous, but I’m just super happy that I managed to keep playing focused.”

Navarro scored wins over Petra Kvitová, Veronika Kudermetova and Barbora Krejčíková before losing in the round of 16. Andreeva defeated Mayar Sherrif, Lucia Bronzetti and Hailey Baptiste before defeating Navarro.

Andreeva will face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. This marks the first time that Bencic, ranked the world’s No. 34 in women’s singles, has advanced past the round of 16 at Wimbledon.

With Navarro’s loss, No. 13 Amanda Anisimova remains the top-ranked US player remaining, as No. 2 Coco Gauff made a surprising first-round exit, falling to unranked Dayana Yastremska in straight sets.
