The original Birkin sells for $10 million

The original Hermès Birkin bag, designed for actor Jane Birkin, was sold at auction in Paris on Thursday for more than $10 million. The original Birkin became the most valuable fashion item sold at auction in Europe, according to Sotheby’s. Guests at the auction estimated that the prototype bag would sell for roughly $1 million to $2 million, but the bidding opened at $1.7 million. The bag went to a private collector from Japan, with the final price of €8.6 million ($10.1 million), including a buyer’s premium. {The New York Times/paywalled}

Bain Capital considers selling Canada Goose

Bain Capital, Canada Goose Holding Inc.’s controlling shareholder, is reportedly considering a sale of its stake in the company. Bain is working with advisers and has been gauging early interest from potential buyers including other private equity firms. Bain acquired a controlling stake in Canada Goose in 2013 and listed the business in 2017. Bain’s stake gives it 55.5% of the voting power at Canada Goose. {Bloomberg/paywalled}

Why tariffs aren’t ruining U.S. shoemakers’ reliance on China

After Donald Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods, shoemakers like Haley Pavone of Pashion Footwear have scouted factories in other countries like Brazil, India and Vietnam, but are met with higher minimum orders and staff who lack training. Even for companies with skilled workers, many still need to import key components from China. No country is as optimized as China when it comes to production, which makes diversification and relocation difficult for U.S. businesses, so some are opting to weather the impact of tariffs by adding fees to cover the extra costs. {Bloomberg Law/paywalled}
