Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fourth-year center Luke Wattenberg, No. 60.
Before the Broncos: Wattenberg (6-4, 300 pounds) played collegiate football in the Pac-12, where he starred for the Washington Huskies. Wattenberg started 48-of-54 games played from 2017-21. In college, Wattenberg showed great versatility, playing games at both center and left guard. Wattenberg started all 43 games from 2018-21, playing left guard in 2018-19, and finishing his Huskies career at center in 2020 and 2021. In 2020 and 2021, Wattenberg earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention both years.
Wattenberg’s versatility caught the eyes of NFL scouts, and he was eventually selected by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round (171st overall) in the 2022 NFL draft.
Broncos tenure: In 2022, Wattenberg dressed for seven games, starting one (at left guard), playing 90 snaps on offense and 18 snaps on special teams. In 2023, Wattenberg dressed for 16 games, playing in a total of 38 offensive snaps and 67 special-teams plays. Wattenberg had a breakout year in 2024. Following the departure of Lloyd Cushenberry during free agency, Wattenberg won the team’s starting center job. Wattenberg played in and started 13 games. He missed four games due to injury.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Wattenberg is poised to start the 2025 season snapping the ball to second-year quarterback Bo Nix. With Wattenberg entering the final year of his rookie contract, there is perhaps a better chance of Wattenberg getting a new deal than him giving up the starting job.
