Ready for the return of another Y2K fashion staple? The early 2000s were a golden age of designer bag trends — think logomania, micro baguettes, and East-West shoulder bags — all of which have staged major comebacks in recent seasons. But, until now, one iconic carryall remained in the archives: the hefty satchel bag. Once an essential purse pairing to boho-inspired ensembles slung over the arms of “It girls like Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie, and Sienna Miller, Y2K satchel bag styles defined the era’s laid-back, effortlessly cool style — and it had the Tumblr reblogs to prove it. Now, Marc Jacobs is further signaling the bag style’s return with the launch of The Cristina Satchel, a modern update on the early aughts relic.

The Cristina Satchel first made its debut on the arms of several front-row attendees at Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2025 runway show in three colorways: black, ivory, and dark plum. This week, the brand officially launched the bag, tapping into peak Y2K nostalgia with a Mean Girls-inspired campaign video that perfectly channels the early-2000s spirit.

Available in two sizes, a standard version priced at $450 and a smaller style for $350, the Cristina Satchel bag is crafted from butter-soft Nappa leather, lending the ruched design a relaxed, worn-in look that echoes the satchels of the early 2000s. Inspired by an archival Marc by Marc Jacobs bag from that era, the updated silhouette has been thoughtfully refined with a sleek, modern edge. Its more refined, architectural shape delivers less weight and clunkiness than past Y2K-era satchel bag designs (like the beloved Marc by Marc Q Baby Groovee), and its elongated top handle ensures you can carry it over your shoulder rather than be confined to the quintessential lower-arm bag slung of the early aughts. The Cristina Satchel marks the latest archival bag the designer has revisited, following the reedition of the iconic Marc Jacobs Stam Bag in 2023 and the Spring 2024 reimagining of the cult-favorite Venetia Bag.

This latest Marc Jacobs drop is hardly the only indicator that the Y2K satchel is back. In March, Chloé’s Fall 2025 runway show ushered in the return of the fashion house’s iconic Paddington Bag, which made its debut under the helm of Phoebe Philo in spring 2005. The boho carryall became a coveted staple of the decade’s best dressed A-listers, from Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie to Lindsay Lohan, Kate Bosworth, and Sienna Miller. In case you had any doubts about its impact this time around: the revitalized “It” bag already has a waiting list.

Just when you thought we were running out of early 2000s trends to bring back, another former status bag trend comes out of retirement. Of course, this time around, the slouchy bag will serve as the backdrop to collections of bag charms and Labubus. Does it get any more modern than that?
