I'm Obsessed With the Matching PJs Meg Stalter and Her On-Screen Dog Wore in Netflix's 'Too Much'

Editors’ Picks are the Fashionista team’s true (#notspon) fashion and beauty obsessions, handpicked by professionals who see it all.

Watching Lena Dunham’s new show “Too Much” on Netflix, it’s tough not to empathize with the main character, Jessica (portrayed by emerging icon Megan Stalter). At the beginning of the story, her life is sort of falling apart: Her long-term boyfriend left her for an influencer, she moved in with her mom and has a mean case of impostor syndrome at work. But she manages to make her way to a new city and live a sparkly (if also kind of bumbling), Y2K rom-com-like life with her adorable hairless dog, Astrid. Her determination to not let even the worst of life get her down is, in part, what makes the show so charming.

Another thing that really lends to that charm? Jessica’s outfits — and her nighttime ones, in particular. One scene in which the costuming immediately struck me features Jessica settling into her new London flat with hairless Astrid (whom she often mentions wanting to clothe), both of them adorably clad in matching night dresses. Jessica’s short red gingham style with a frilled neckline — from British brand If Only If — is an aesthetic that mirrors Dunham’s real-life preferences, according to the brand.

“Nighties aren’t pieces belonging to the past; they are beloved by so many generations of women today (Lena herself is a devoted nightie wearer!),” says creative director and owner of If Only If, Emily Campbell. “It [feels] like nighties are finally getting the attention they so rightfully deserve.”

Seeing Jessica and her pup wear the matchy look made me immediately confront an important question for myself: Why haven’t I ordered myself and my dogs coordinating PJs?

Unfortunately for us pet parents, the animal-friendly version of the sleepwear isn’t available for sale, and Campbell plans to keep it that way: “I think I need to commit to Mia (the dog-actress) being the only owner of a bespoke If Only If pet nightie…but let’s just say [our children’s wear] could certainly double up should you and your doggy pal so wish.”

With the made-for-humans style running a cool $178, it may be a blessing in disguise that I can only add one to my cart. Aside from loving the (dog) mommy-and-me complementary PJs, I’m just as excited to see romantic nightgowns embraced on-screen, and I can’t wait to revamp my own nighttime wardrobe with this cute-as-can-be look.
