Cowboys star Micah Parsons wants new deal, blames ownership for delay

Well, the gloves are off. In a recent appearance on The Undertaker’s podcast (of all places), Cowboys superstar Micah Parsons aired out the Dallas front office for what he feel is them playing a played-out waiting game when it comes to agreeing on his extension. All of the complaints fans and media have had over the organization waiting until the last minute to make deals was crystalized in a Q&A segment where the wrestling legend asked why Parsons is about to enter training camp without a long-term extension.

Parsons, entering his fifth NFL season, spoke truth to power about he and his side’s efforts to get the deal done as early as last season. However according to Parsons, Dallas’ ownership (Jerry and Stephen Jones) prioritized re-signing Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, and are now trying to have Parsons take less than other stars at his position despite the market shifting with every new deal that has been consummated across the NFL.

We obviously wanted to get it done early, we wanted that relief off our back. Obviously ownership’s always gonna make it drag out… make it more complicated than it has to be. Lack of communication from that standpoint.

I will never understand it. We wanted to do the contract last year. They were just kind of like ‘We want to do Dak and CeeDee’.

Then you go out there, perform again, and you would think ‘yeah alright we’ll get it done early. There’s some guys that’s about ready to get re-paid like Myles (Garrett), like Maxx (Crosby) is gone,’ so you’d think, ‘yeah let’s get ahead of that.’

I’ll just never understand when guys come into the league and they’re consistent and they perform well, why they gtot such an urge.. because there’s guys that just have one good year or maybe two good years and they get it right away. And now you got TJ (Watt) and Maxx and all these other guys that’s getting paid, and you can’t want us to take less because you decided to wait.

Parsons is set to play the 2025 season under the fifth-year option for a base salary of $24 million. The former first-round pick has 52.5 sacks across his first four seasons, the most in NFL history for a player who joined the league right out of college.

There are now eight edge rushers who make more on average per year than Parsons’ total, including the monumental extensions that have been signed in the last year by Crosby with the Raiders (three years, $106.5 million) and Garrett with the Cleveland Browns (four years, $160 million). The Cowboys could have been out in front of both of those deals, when Parsons was publicly negotiating and saying he didn’t see a need to approach $40 million in average salary.

The market has now caught up to that number and given the large age gap betwen Parsons (26) and Garrett (30), it would stand to reason that he’s not going to accept anything less than what the Browns star received.
