Saints can kick off their training camp QB battle without distractions

The New Orleans Saints start up training camp in a couple of days, on July 22, and will now be able to embark on their quarterback battle without any looming distractions. The one big domino left to fall went down on Saturday as the team finally reached a contract agreement with rookie quarterback Tyler Shough. It was a fully guaranteed four-year contract valued at $10.795 million.

Now, the quarterback competition will be able to start without the cloud of the potential of Shough sitting out without his deal. The decision that Kellen Moore makes on the starting quarterback will have massive implications on the season. Being able to do it without any distractions will be very helpful.

While it will indeed be an open competition between Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener, the contract certainly gives Shough the early edge. The Saints are paying him nearly $11 million guaranteed and need to figure out if they can afford to pass on a quarterback if given the chance to draft one early in the 2026 draft.

Shough spent a long time in college, but is by far the less experienced of the two. He threw about 400 fewer passes than Rattler in college and, of course, Rattler was able to start a few games in the NFL last season.

That one year that Shough got to play out showed a lot of potential, though. He completed 62.7% of his passes for 3,195 yards with 23 touchdowns to six interceptions. The ability is there. Moore must have seen something he liked to draft him in the second round and then go on to guarantee him nearly $11 million.

Rattler will have to come on strong and leave no doubt that he is the better passer to win the job.
