Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has gotten a contract extension

Not too long ago, Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka was a beleaguered man. He had adroitly put together a team that won the 2020 NBA championship, but he dismantled that crew shortly afterward, which led to a few years of purgatory, not to mention many calls from the franchise’s fan base for him to be fired.

But he redeemed himself big-time with February’s tectonic trade that brought the Lakers Luka Doncic. Several weeks prior to that, he dealt struggling guard D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets for Dorian Finney-Smith, the type of 3-and-D forward they had badly needed for a while. That first trade started the transformation that has thus far culminated with L.A. claiming the third seed in the Western Conference.

Pelinka has apparently been rewarded for his handiwork this season. Per Shams Charania, he has been given a contract extension, as well as the additional new title of president of basketball operations.

Granted, Pelinka still has lots of work to do this summer, regardless of how far the Lakers go in the playoffs. They badly need a starting-level defensive center, as well as improved guard and wing depth. Still, they’re set up for success for quite a while, assuming LeBron James sticks around and continues to play at a high level.
