The Seattle Seahawks held their first training camp practice on Wednesday afternoon. It felt like the official start of the 2025 season, though it was a 90 minute pad-less session. Several intriguing topics emerged, including the usage of Brady Russell, who Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald discussed after practice.
Russell made the position switch this offseason from tight end to fullback. New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has routinely employed a fullback in his offenses over the years. Even with Noah Fant’s release, the plan is to keep Russell at fullback, per multiple reports.
Coach Macdonald praised Russell’s versatility after practice. Kubiak has been utilizing Russell at both tight and fullback throughout OTAs, minicamp, and during the first training camp practice. He’s competing for the fullback job with rookie Robbie Ouzts, per ESPN reporter Brady Henderson.
A third-year pro, Russell earned just 33 snaps on offense as a tight end under Ryan Grubb last season. The former undrafted free agent was far more involved on special teams, earning 230 snaps in the third phase. That made Russell Seattle’s fifth-most used player on special teams.
Russell is entrenched in a position battle at fullback. His versatility and special teams experience potentially provides him the upper hand over Ouzts. Coach Macdonald has already been impressed with his versatility at training camp.
