Bears TE Cole Kmet not surprised Ben Johnson pulled starters

The first day of Chicago Bears training camp showed that things aren’t going to come easy with Ben Johnson and the new coaching staff leading the way.

During Wednesday’s practice, Johnson pulled the first-team starting offense off of the field after they struggled to line up properly on consecutive attempts. But it didn’t surprise players.

Tight end Cole Kmet, now on his third head coach since entering the NFL, has quickly picked up on his new head coach and his expectations. Following Wednesday’s practice, Kmet said he wasn’t surprised that Johnson took the starters off the field and put the blame on the players for failing to execute.

“I think that’s on par for how Ben is,” Kmet said, “so I can’t repeat what he said because I was actually a little exhausted, so all I heard was a little bit of yelling and I knew that obviously things weren’t going well there for the last few plays. If you’re not doing it right, he’s going to get you out and he’s not going to see that stuff continue. So, it’s just a lesson to us that you have to be on the details. We have to be on the details going into practice in order to get our reps in because you know, unfortunately when that type of stuff happens, we got guys now missing on our reps and those are opportunities for guys to make a team or whatever. All the reps are important. All that matters.”

Kmet has seen a lot during his time with the Bears and has only one playoff appearance to show for it (back during his rookie season in 2020). On his third quarterback and third head coach since being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft, Kmet is hoping this new coaching staff and quarterback are not only here for the long haul but get back to their winning ways.

The veteran will have company in the tight end room this season, as the team selected Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick this year. Loveland and Kmet playing alongside one another not only brings another wrinkle to Johnson’s offense but gives Chicago a dynamic 1-2 punch at tight end.
