Legendary BYU QBs just visited Provo, and it’s no coincidence originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Two legends showed up this week, and it wasn’t by accident.
The heat isn’t just coming from the Utah summer sun. With BYU football fall camp about to open, all eyes are on one thing: who’s going to be the next quarterback in Provo?
This year’s race has more questions than answers. The expected starter, Jake Retzlaff, is gone, now at Tulane. In his place is an open competition between Stanford transfer Bear Bachmeier, Utah State transfer McCae Hillstead, Western Michigan transfer Treyson Bourguet, and freshman Emerson Geilman. The battle is tight. The pressure is real.
On Tuesday, two Cougar greats walked into that quarterback room: Steve Young and John Beck. Both had words for the four players fighting to lead BYU this fall. And make no mistake, their timing was intentional.
Steve Young: The Ultimate Underdog Returns
When Steve Young started at BYU, he was eighth on the depth chart. He finished as an All-American and went on to become a Hall of Fame quarterback for the 49ers. This week, he returned to the same program where it all began, not for glory, but for mentorship.
Young spent time speaking with the new wave of Cougar quarterbacks, including Bachmeier and Bourguet. His message? Earn it. Every day. From scout team to starter, every rep counts. That advice hits different coming from someone who once had to claw his way into a starting job in Provo.
John Beck: The Trainer and Mentor
John Beck, BYU’s three-year starter from 2004 to 2006, is now a go-to QB trainer at 3DQB in California. He’s worked with NFL stars like Zach Wilson, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Fields, and now, he’s back in Provo helping shape the next Cougar leader.
Beck’s connection to this QB room runs deep. He’s worked with several of BYU’s current quarterbacks and knows what it takes to survive, and thrive in Provo’s high-pressure environment. He stood beside the group on Tuesday, not as a distant legend, but as a mentor with skin in the game.
Treyson Bourguet’s Goat Emoji Moment
Treyson Bourguet may not have said much, but his reaction to the moment was loud and clear. After the visit, he reposted the photo of Young and Beck with nothing but two goat emojis. That silent nod says what every quarterback in that room is feeling.

These aren’t just football heroes, they’re reminders of what’s possible in a BYU jersey.

What’s Next?
Fall camp opens Wednesday, July 30, and the quarterback competition is fully wide open. The four-man battle may not end quickly, and whoever wins the job will carry the weight of a program, and a legacy.
One thing is certain: BYU’s quarterback room isn’t short on pressure, talent, or now, legendary advice.
Don’t look away. This race is just getting started.
