Ice Cube Reveals Why Big3 Offered Caitlin Clark and Not Angel Reese

Ice Cube Reveals Why Big3 Offered Caitlin Clark and Not Angel Reese originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

During Caitlin Clark’s final NCAA Tournament run with the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2024, BIG3 co-founder Ice Cube confirmed on social media that he had offered her a $5 million contract to join the league.

Clark obviously didn’t accept the offer to join the league — which is littered with former NBA stars like Dwight Howard, Michael Beasley and Paul Millsap — and is the face of the WNBA and Indiana Fever.

While it was a long shot for the BIG3, it was an attempt that was certainly worth it, considering Clark is one of the most popular athletes in sports. However, the former N.W.A member was recently asked why the league didn’t offer Chicago Sky star and Caitlin Clark’s rival, Angel Reese. He bluntly admitted the same level of value wasn’t there.

“Yeah, she’s a great player,” Cube said to TMZ. “The thing with Caitlin Clark it was just to unlock millions of dollars for the league because of her stardom. What our sponsors were telling us. You know they didn’t tell us the same thing about Angel Reese. I don’t know if we can make that same offer.”

When asked if Reese could have received a smaller price to join the league, Ice Cube said while it’s not “personal,” Reese simply wouldn’t bring the same level of financial gain.

“I don’t think we can make that same offer because it won’t have the same impact to the league,” Cube said.

Going to the WNBA has worked out well for both Clark and Reese, though it is possible they could have played in both the WNBA and the BIG3 at the same time. For Clark, she has been a WNBA All-Star starter twice, having been voted captain this year. As for Reese, she is also a two-time WNBA All-Star. Both players are primarily responsible for ensuring that they and their fellow WNBA colleagues are in a position to receive higher pay once the new collective bargaining agreement is agreed upon.

Unfortunately, both Clark (groin) and Reese (back) are injured and won’t face off in Sunday’s meeting between the Fever and Sky.
