There are a few changes since the start of camp as the Rams inch closer to the season
Since arriving at Loyola Marymount University, the Los Angeles Rams have held eight training camp practices. They’ve been of varying lengths and intensity, but it’s all part of the plan to ramp things up before the start of the regular season.
Having completed two blocks of four days each, the Rams have reached the end of Week 2 of camp. With just a few practices at LMU left, it’s a good time to take another look at the depth chart. Considering the team likes to keep personnel and strategy details under wraps, it can be difficult to project how the depth chart looks. However, we did our best to predict who the starters are, who the primary backups are and who might be fighting for a roster spot.
Here’s our latest depth chart prediction following Week 2 of camp.
Quarterback
- QB1: Matthew Stafford
- QB2: Jimmy Garoppolo
- QB3: Stetson Bennett
- QB4: Dresser Winn
Nothing has changed with this group and nothing will for the rest of the summer. The only question is whether Bennett will make the 53-man roster as the third quarterback or not. He’s having a good camp but will that be enough to take up a regular-season roster spot? We’ll see.
Sean McVay and Mike LaFleur have been pleased with Bennett’s play as he takes advantage of the increased opportunities with Stafford sidelined.
“I’m really proud of Stetson and I want to continue to see him just stack blocks and keep enjoying himself,” McVay said Thursday.
Running back
- RB1: Kyren Williams
- RB2: Blake Corum
- RB3: Jarquez Hunter
- RB4: Ronnie Rivers
- Depth: Cody Schrader, Jordan Waters
The top three are locked in with minimal room for movement. It’s possible Hunter will push Corum for the RB2 role, and that both players will eat into Williams’ snaps, but there’s little debate about where each guy stands right now.
There haven’t been many reports about Rivers in camp so he figures to still be RB4 for now.
Wide receiver
- WR1: Puka Nacua
- WR2: Davante Adams
- WR3: Tutu Atwell
- WR4: Jordan Whittington
- WR5: Konata Mumpfield
- WR6: Xavier Smith
- Depth: Tru Edwards, Mario Williams, Drake Stoops, Brennan Presley
- ST: Britain Covey
Nacua and Davante won’t be challenged for their spots on the depth chart whatsoever. It’s at WR3 where the fun begins. Atwell hasn’t made nearly as much noise as Whittington and Mumpfield, who have both stood out in camp.
Atwell has had a few documented drops on deep shots, so that hasn’t helped his stock. But with his speed, he’s going to have a role no matter what – especially with a $10 million guaranteed salary. It’s possible the Rams will only keep the top five receivers, giving all of them a chance to play this season.
Tight end
- TE1: Tyler Higbee
- TE2: Colby Parkinson
- TE3: Terrance Ferguson
- TE4: Davis Allen
- Depth: Anthony Torres, Mark Redman
The tight end group has been pretty quiet in training camp so it’s difficult to glean much about how each player has performed. All of the top four guys have gotten first-team reps with the Rams giving Higbee two days off thus far, but it remains to be seen how many tight ends they’ll keep on the initial roster.
It could very well be Higbee, Parkinson, Ferguson and Allen all on the 53.
Offensive line
- LT: Alaric Jackson, D.J. Humphries, David Quessenberry, A.J. Arcuri
- LG: Steve Avila, Beaux Limmer, Willie Lampkin, Wyatt Bowles
- C: Coleman Shelton, Dylan McMahon
- RG: Kevin Dotson, Justin Dedich, KT Leveston, Ben Dooley
- RT: Rob Havenstein, Warren McClendon Jr., Trey Wedig
With Jackson seemingly making good progress in his recovery from blood clots, we can still keep him penciled in as the starting left tackle. He’s done individual work and taken part in team drills during jog-throughs, which is a positive sign. Humphries would be the next man up, presumably, if Jackson has to miss any time, though Quessenberry is also a candidate to be the swing tackle.
The other four starters are entrenched in their roles, with plenty still to be sorted out on the second unit. Limmer, McMahon and Dedich can all play center or guard, and all of them have a good chance to make the 53-man roster as primary backups.
Defensive line
- DT: Kobie Turner, Larrell Murchison, Desjuan Johnson
- NT: Poona Ford, Tyler Davis, Bill Norton, Da’Jon Terry
- DE: Braden Fiske, Ty Hamilton, Decarius Hawthorne, Jack Heflin
Turner mentioned Davis as one of the Rams’ top four defensive linemen and Sean McVay said he’s going to be a “major factor” in 2025. He can play any spot on the interior, as can most of the Rams’ other defensive linemen. Hamilton has had a quiet camp, as have the other backup D-linemen.
Outside linebacker
- OLB1: Jared Verse
- OLB2: Byron Young
- OLB3: Josaiah Stewart
- OLB4: Nick Hampton
- OLB5: Brennan Jackson
- Depth: Keir Thomas, Josh Pearcy, Jamil Muhammad
After Verse and Young, Stewart and Hampton have seemed to get the most first-team reps among the backups. That’s bad news for Jackson, who is in his second season with the Rams but doesn’t appear to be making a major impact in practice. Thomas could challenge him for a spot on the 53-man roster as the fifth edge rusher.
Inside linebacker
- ILB1: Nate Landman
- ILB2: Omar Speights
- ILB3: Troy Reeder
- Depth: Chris Paul Jr., Shaun Dolac, Elias Neal, Tony Fields II
We’ve gotten clarity on the linebacker battle in training camp where Landman has left no doubt about his role as the top option. He’s wearing the green dot and leading that group as he’s become the breakout star of camp so far.
Paul’s calf injury has been a frustrating setback, preventing him from doing much in practice. He’ll make the team but he has some catching up to do.
Cornerback
- CB1: Darious Williams
- CB2: Cobie Durant
- Nickel: Quentin Lake
- CB3: Ahkello Witherspoon
- CB4: Emmanuel Forbes Jr.
- Depth: Derion Kendrick, Josh Wallace, Cam Lampkin, A.J. Green, Shaun Jolly
Williams, Durant and Witherspoon are all going to contribute in meaningful ways this season. Their snaps may just depend on who’s playing best at a given moment or the types of receivers the Rams are facing in a certain week.
Lake is never going to come off the field in his nickel role again, and Forbes has performed well in practice as he tries to get his career back on track. He has a good chance to make the 53-man roster.
Safety
- SS: Kamren Curl, Jaylen McCollough
- FS: Kamren Kinchens
- Depth: Nate Valcarcel, Tanner Ingle, Malik Dixon-Williams
Curl, McCollough and Kinchens are all valuable and important players for the Rams who will have a major impact again this season. After that, it remains to be seen if they will keep any other safeties. Lake can technically be a safety, too, so that’s something to keep in mind if L.A. only keeps three true safeties from this group.
Special teams
- K Joshua Karty
- P Ethan Evans
- LS Alex Ward
- KR: Xavier Smith, Jordan Whittington
- PR: Britain Covey, Xavier Smith
Special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn hasn’t given any indications of who’s leading each of the return competitions, but it’ll likely be some combination of Smith, Covey and Whittington regardless.
