Barneys New York heir sues family members for tax evasion

Robert Pressman, a third-generation member of the founding family of Barneys New York, has filed a lawsuit alleging that his kin evaded millions in taxes by falsely claiming that their late mother lived in Florida. Pressman’s attorney Randall M. Fox said they are “seeking in excess of $50 million.” Pressman is taking action as a “whistleblower” under the New York False Claims Act, which authorizes citizens to bring lawsuits to recover triple damages for fraudulent claims submitted to New York. If the case is successful and a recovery is made on behalf of the government, Pressman may recoup between 15 and 30%. {WWD/paywalled}

Inside Marc Jacobs’s anti-politics creative wonderland

In America’s current cultural landscape where free expression has been under attack, The Washington Post‘s Robin Givhan describes Marc Jacobs as “an antidote to the ugliness of now.” The designer has always done his own thing creatively since founding his namesake brand in 1984, and his designs can inspire complicated feelings of both admiration and annoyance. Jacobs says he would not describe himself as political, but he is “alive in this moment” and so he is aware of the limits being placed on expression. {The Washington Post/paywalled}

Mexican shoe imports receive 90-day tariff extension

Donald Trump threatened to blanket all Mexican imports with a 30% tariff rate if a deal wasn’t reached by Friday, but now shoe firms that produce in Mexico will keep the 25% tariff for another 90 days. Trump instituted the 90-day pause following a telephone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The new temporary 25% tariff extension ends on Oct. 31. {WWD/paywalled}

China’s fast-fashion capital slows under Trump’s tariffs

Home to nearly 20 million people, Guangzhou is the heart of the global fast fashion industry, but uncertainty over U.S. tariffs is putting pressure on orders and profits. With an Aug. 12 deadline looming to reach a trade deal between the U.S. and China, workers in Guangzhou are wondering whether or not they’ll be able to keep selling clothes to Americans. If tariffs rise, factories need to lower production costs to combat it. Experts say that the uncertainty of the trade war could negatively impact working conditions, encouraging workers to add hours to their already long shifts. {The Guardian}

Unilever’s wellness portfolio sees double-digit growth

On Thursday, Unilever’s beauty and well-being division posted 3.7% underlying sales growth in the first half of 2025 to €6.5 billion ($7.5 billion), with wellness delivering double-digit growth for the 21st straight quarter. Unilever’s well-being CEO Jostein Solheim credits timing (aka an accelerating wellness market) and its “‘go narrow, go deep’ brand strategy” for its success in the category. Some of its largest wellness brands include Liquid IV, Olly and Nutrafol. Unilever’s growing presence across hydration, hair health and nutritional supplements reflects a scalable category investment where these brands are tapping into rising consumer demand. {Vogue Business/paywalled}
