Pittsburgh Steelers might have unexpected offensive tackle option

You never see skill-position players transition into offensive linemen, but Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington believes he can do it.

Washington was asked if he could make the switch to offensive tackle and the 2023 third-round pick believes he can.

"I feel like I can, but right now, I’m a tight end. So, I’m gonna focus on that. Later on down the road or any time in the road, if they ask for me to do that, I’m gonna still do my best ability," Washington said. "I’m gonna do it with lots of confidence. I feel like I can, if I wanted to."

If anyone can make that transition, it's Washington.

On top of being a fantastic athlete, the tight end stands at a massive 6-foot-7 and 264 pounds. Washington would definitely have to gain more weight to make a full-time switch, but it can be done.

Along with his size and athleticism, Washington's blocking ability gives him a chance to make a successful transition.

According to Pro Football Focus, he has tallied pass-blocking grades of 72.3 and 67.9 over his first two years in the NFL, and he improved his run-blocking grade from 51.3 in his rookie year to 68.8 in his sophomore campaign.

Now, would we ever expect a full-time switch to happen? No, especially with how much Arthur Smith utilizes tight ends in his offense.

But if the Steelers needed him in a pinch, Washington would do a better job than most tight ends could.
