With Rutgers Football‘s fall training camp program fully underway, the program’s newcomers are starting to see their roles fill out as they look to make an impact on the Banks.
One of those newcomers, former Charlotte tight end Colin Weber, spoke with The Knight Report after practice to discuss his early impressions with the Scarlet Knights, his time with the 49ers in North Carolina, and the expectations for the 2025 season.

Q: You transferred, obviously to Rutgers, what’s it been like so far?
A: It’s been great, man. Obviously an adjustment period at first, just learning the playbook and figuring out the guys and the coaches. But it’s been great, and I’m excited to be here.
Q: It’s only your second school, but third different conference. What’s that transition been like? What’s the team like compared to last year?
A: I think for me, it’s always been a dream to play in the Big Ten, growing up a Midwest kid from Michigan. So you hear about how some guys are bigger, some guys are stronger, and that’s true, but I’m just excited for the competition. There’s been competition everywhere I’ve been, and it’s just the same thing for me. So it’s been good, and I’m excited about it.
Q: Take me through the transfer portal process. What was that like, when did Rutgers reach out, and how did you end up here?
A: You know, it’s a lot more stressful than people say, just because you have such a short amount of time to figure everything out. But when I took the visit here, I loved it. I loved the staff. Some of the players I met were great, and ultimately I thought it was just best for me, and so that’s why I made that decision.
Q: You had a little bit of a dip in your numbers from 2023 to 2024, what played a factor in that? Was it more of the coaching change?
A: I think we just had more talent in the receiver room from year to year. I wasn’t necessarily focused on production. More of what can I do best to help the team win? And again, that’s going to be the goal this year, too. So, just focusing on how I can help the team win.

Q: It’s been a while since Rutgers had a really good tight end, I should say. How would you describe your game? And do you think you could be that guy?
A: I think we have a bunch of good tight ends in our room. I think the part of my game that kind of stands out is versatility. I think I’m able to do both things, whether that’s the run game, pass game. I’ve kind of prided myself on trying to soak in all the information about quite literally everything, just to be able to be as versatile as I can.
Q: Having a guy like [tight ends coach] Scott Vallone in the room, a guy that’s been coaching offensive line in the past, how has he helped you with your blocking?
A: He’s been great. I think the biggest thing with him is the details. The details matter a lot to him. We talk about inches, like my footwork, where my toe lands in the ground. Things like that have really, I guess, challenged my mind. And then to go out there and keep improving things like that every day. You just go inch by inch, and it’s getting me to where I’m not there yet, but it’s getting me to where I want to be.
Q: What kind of goals do you have this season personally, and for the team, or even the position group?
A: I don’t really like to set goals, honestly. I think, again, like I said earlier, the biggest thing is, what can I do, and what can we do as a tight end room, as an offense, to help this team win games? And I think a lot of guys would agree with that. That’s the ultimate goal: How many games, or how can we help them win games?
