Miami Dolphins outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips is a little tired of meeting offensive tackle Patrick Paul in practice reps. His “annoying as hell” teammate has been driving him nuts in all the right ways at training camp.
“Patrick has huge upside,” Phillips told reporters Tuesday, via David Furones of the Sun Sentinel. “He’s annoying as hell to go against, I’ll tell you that much, because he is a [expletive] talker and during practice, I hate him. But afterwards, the only thing I can do is admire him, admire his physical presence, admire his skillset, admire his athleticism, admire his work ethic, and his ability to make adjustments and corrections.
“I think he’s going to be a fabulous player, and he already has made a big step in this league. So yeah, Patrick’s bad-ass. He knows how I feel about him. So, just like I said, I hate going against him. He knows I hate going against him.”
Paul’s trash talk took some reporters by surprise, as the 6’7 offensive tackle has been the consummate gentleman in his interactions with the media.
“He’s a great guy,” Phillips clarified. “He’s articulate, he’s very intelligent. He’s a very polite gentle giant. When he gets on that field, man, he’s a different animal. It’s a good thing. You want your tackles to be hard-ass.”
Paul has received consistent praise throughout the Dolphins’ training camp. His predecessor at left tackle, Terron Armstead, listed the second-year tackle as one of the most impressive players he observed at camp. Head coach Mike McDaniel called Paul’s growth “monumental” and Dolphins reporter Travis Wingfield observed “pure stonewalling” of defenders in camp from Paul.
