The New York Giants entered the offseason with a major problem at the quarterback position.
General manager Joe Schoen had an excellent approach to that issue, though. He signed veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and then he traded up into the first round of the 2025 NFL draft to select Jaxson Dart.
Now, the Giants not only have a veteran quarterback to lead their team in 2025, but Wilson and Winston will both mentor Dart.
Many expect that Dart will earn his starting spot before this season is out, but offensive coordinator Mike Kafka isn’t getting ahead of himself.
“I’d say Jaxson is right on schedule from what we’d expect in terms of just understanding the offense, continuing to grow and learn every day,” Kafka told reporters on Wednesday. “Every day we’re presenting him — not just him but all the quarterbacks — with different situations and some situations you’ve probably never seen before.
“Those have been good to build off of, whether it’s in two-minute, whether it’s a third-down situation, or a certain blitz look that we’re getting, he’s able to kind of grow and learn from those examples. And now, as he starts banking more and more looks, more and more reps – we do a lot of this throughout the walkthrough as well, he can kind of see – now he’s starting to put the picture together a little bit better and cleaner for a rookie.”
Being on track is exactly what the Giants need from their rookie quarterback. He may not play a down in 2025, or he could be tasked with taking over the team if Wilson is injured, both of which are possibilities. Being on track in his development is what will dictate how ready he is for the field. If he’s not ready, Winston is still in the wings to take over should Wilson go down.
For Kafka, he’s looking for Dart to operate “within the confines of the offense and going out there and playing confidently, being decisive, command the huddle. I think for Jaxson, for a young player … he’s out there calming them down and having great poise and great confidence, and then just going and playing football. It’s a game you love and you know, you’ve been playing it for a long time. My biggest piece of advice is just go out there, enjoy it, play, have fun, and go be aggressive.”
There won’t be any splitting of hairs when it comes to evaluating his production and stats, Kafka said.
“We’ll evaluate everybody and everything.”
Assuming we see Dart on the field this Saturday against the Buffalo Bills, we’ll get a taste of exactly what Kafka is talking about with Dart’s development.
