How Glamnetic's Magnetic Lashes and Press-on Nails Became an Overnight Sensation

“I kind of stumbled upon [the beauty business] by accident,” Ann McFerran, CEO and founder of Glamnetic, told me on The Fashionista Network. (Watch the full interview here!)

Born in Thailand, McFerran immigrated to the United States as a young child alongside her single mother. She went on to graduate from UCLA with a degree in psychobiology, originally intending to pursue a career in medicine. But her heart wasn’t in it, so she became a full-time artist.

Her pivot into the beauty space came a couple of years later, when she developed an entrepreneurial itch. So in 2019, she founded Glamnetic, a magnetic lash brand. “Application was something that was difficult for a lot of people, and I wanted to create easy-to-apply lashes,” she explained.

McFerran didn’t realize it at the time, but her brand filled a major market gap. Add in the fact that it launched just before the pandemic, a time when people cared most about eye products, and it was clear that Glamnetic was destined for success. It was an overnight sensation: The company finished its first year with $50 million in sales. 

Fast forward to today, and Glamnetic remains a hit: It has since expanded to include press-on nails, which have become the core of its business. The brand has also gone viral on TikTok multiple times and is an Ulta success story. But McFerran didn’t achieve all of this without facing her challenges. She shared that it was difficult in the early years to navigate inventory and forecasting after the brand went viral. She also explained why it’s difficult for beauty founders to expand to various categories.
