Oklahoma Sooners a long shot for College Football Playoff?

The Oklahoma Sooners enter the 2025 season outside of the top 25 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. It’s an unfamiliar situation for one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport. But that’s what happens when everything that could go wrong does for the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners are looking to rewrite the narratives and prove they’re a better team than they were a year ago.

While a number of national analysts think highly of the Sooners, there are some who are taking a wait-and-see approach. Over at ESPN, the Sooners were dubbed as long shots for the College Football Playoff in their SEC preview.

In what figures to be a big season for Oklahoma coach Brent Venables, the Sooners added former Washington State quarterback John Mateer and running back Jaydn Ott from Cal. The defense should be solid, and if new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle can turn things around, the Sooners might be a sleeper. The Sooners enter the season with a lot to prove to the nation after what happened last season. But this is a team that’s made a lot of changes to the personnel for an offense that was one of the worst in the SEC last season. The hope is that Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer can at least return the offense to respectability. With Brent Venables calling the defense, one that figures to be really good again in 2025, the Sooners’ offense doesn’t have to score 40 or 50 points per game to be successful.

And that should be encouraging for Oklahoma. Even though the metrics say the schedule is difficult this year, the reality is that the Sooners are significantly improved on paper and should be better prepared to play every team on their slate.

Oklahoma may be considered a long shot due to what happened in 2024 or the schedule, but they’re actually closer to a playoff team than many are willing to admit.
