Two years ago, a group led by Josh Harris purchased the Washington Commanders for a then-record $6.05 billion for a North American professional sports franchise. It was a happy time to be a Washington NFL fan—no more Dan Snyder.
Harris and his ownership group immediately went to work, making millions of improvements to then-FedEx Field. However, it was a rough debut season for the Harris Ownership Group. Everything changed in January 2024 when Harris fired Ron Rivera and hired Adam Peters as general manager, who then hired Dan Quinn as head coach. In April 2024, the Commanders drafted quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick.
Washington then had its best season in 33 years, going 12-5 and reaching the NFC championship game. In addition to on-field success, the Commanders had D.C., Maryland, and Virginia all vying to host their next stadium. However, the District was always the Commanders’ goal, and it’s finally going to happen. Yes, there is one vote remaining, but it’s almost a guarantee that an NFL franchise will build a multi-use stadium on the grounds of the old RFK Stadium.
Things couldn’t be any better for one of the NFL’s flagship franchises.
Sportico recently released NFL team values and, no surprise, the Dallas Cowboys topped the list, worth a whopping $12.8 billion. The Commanders came in at No. 10, with a value of $7.47 billion. Consider that the Commanders have already increased in value by $1.42 billion in two years under Harris’s ownership. And this is without a new stadium.
Here’s what Sportico said about Washington’s new stadium deal:
The Commanders fit this bill. They were the NFL’s most valuable and profitable team before business fell off a cliff under prior owner Dan Snyder. Harris wants to restore the club to the top of the financial table. To help do that, he lured Mark Clouse from Campbell’s, where he was CEO of the $10 billion-in-revenue company, to be president of the Commanders.
This month, the Washington, D.C., city council voted to support a $3.8 billion, mixed-used stadium district, including a new stadium for the Commanders. A 65,000-seat domed stadium on the site of RFK Stadium is the planned center of a 180-acre retail, housing and entertainment development in the southeast part of the district. A final vote on taxpayer funding is set for Sept. 17.
