Did an NFL Insider inadvertently break the news that running back James Cook would end his hold-in and sign a contract with the Buffalo Bills?
It sure seems like it.
Several NFL analysts took part in ESPN’s fantasy football marathon on August 12. Participating in the draft was well-connected NFL Insider Adam Shefter.
Careful viewers noticed how Shefter used his intel to make a value pick and grab a top running back as his RB2.
Shefter held the 10th spot in the 10-team PPR draft. ESPN had a commercial break after the third round, one in which the contestants discussed possible future picks. Ahead of his fourth round pick, Shefter introduced the pick by talking about how there was “another running back in the news today who ended his hold-in,” referencing James Cook’s active return to the field at Bills training camp.
Fellow analyst Anita Marks, who held the following pick, could only chime in with “We just had this conversation in the break…Seriously, dude!”.
With the backdrop of laughter from his fellow leaguemates, Shefter selected James Cook with the 31st-overall pick in this edition of the fantasy football marathon.
How did Shefter know that Cook would be taking on a more active role and finalizing his contract extension?
Shefter revealed, “I went to the source.”
Brandon Beane officially inked his star running back to a four-year extension. The deal was announced on Wednesday, August 13. However, the verbal agreement between Cook and the Bills came together late Tuesday night. Beane highlighted the timeline: âI think we had an understanding that, you know, we need to practice if weâre going to be able to get back to the table. And so I think there was good faith on both parts from him and his agent to our side. Once we got him back on the practice field, we really worked hard yesterday. I think it was roughly 11:00 or so last night where we were able to say were both sides are good with this and weâll get it signed in the morning.â
Shefter’s pick took place approximately three hours before both sides were “good” with the deal.
Cook’s contract is valued at $48 million over four years, with $30 million in guaranteed cash.
Cook is coming off consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Cook tied for the league lead with 16 rushing touchdowns.
