Jim Zebrowski, D.K. McDonald on facing Fresno State

The KU coordinators met with the media on Monday to discuss Fresno State, the depth chart and several other topics.

Watch what D.K. McDonald and Jim Zebrowski had to say about the season opener and closing out fall camp.

D.K. McDonald

Kansas defensive coordinator D.K. McDonald likes the energy and leadership from his players, especially the senior group, as the team heads into game week. He said Fresno State’s physical run game and veteran quarterback as major challenges, stressing his defense must be disciplined and prepared to adjust.

McDonald explained the Hawk hybrid position as a flexible piece of the defense that can shift based on game flow. He also praised captain Justice Finkley’s leadership and work ethic, calling him a natural fit in the role.

At cornerback, Austin Alexander earned a starting spot through consistent improvement, while injuries gave extra reps to him and Jahlil Hurley, giving them more depth. McDonald also named linebackers Bangally Kamara and Trey Lathan as starters but emphasized the entire group will contribute. Overall, he said communication on defense has been strong, and he likes the depth and development across multiple positions.

Jim Zebrowski

Zebrowski is optimistic about the team’s depth and competition across multiple positions. He highlighted ongoing battles at left guard and tackle, saying that rotations will continue until someone pulls ahead.

At receiver, Zebrowski labeled the group versatile and selfless, crediting competition, especially from transfers, for pushing veterans like Keaton, Doug, and Bryce to improve. He also mentioned quarterback Cole Ballard’s “functional intelligence” as a reason for his edge on the depth chart, giving him a slight edge over Isaiah Marshall.

Zebrowski stressed daily improvement, particularly in protection and execution details. He likes the ability to go four-deep at tight end. On Fresno State, he said their defensive coordinator brings toughness and proven schemes from Northern Illinois, making preparation a challenge.
