Rams’ Matthew Stafford practices for first time in training camp

LOS ANGELES — For the first time during training camp, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced Monday.

Stafford, 37, had been sidelined because of an aggravated disk in his back, and other than throwing passes in a workout two weeks ago had not practiced with the team.

On Monday, Stafford took part in the entire practice, starting with individuals and then progressing to full-team drills.

“I thought he did a good job today,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said. “We had 26 plays of team, and he did a really nice job of managing the huddle. I thought he saw the field well, I thought he went where the ball should go and there was some good competitive work on both sides today.”

After practice, McVay declined to share the plan for the rest of the week, saying, “We’re going to keep it a day — and really a week — at a time.” McVay stressed that it’s a “very fluid” situation and one “that demands flexibility as well.”

“It was great to be able to see him out there today and we will see how this afternoon goes and tomorrow,” McVay said.

Last week, when asked whether Stafford’s back injury is related to function or pain management, McVay said, “I think probably a little bit of both.”

On Aug. 9, Stafford threw 68 passes in a workout at the Rams’ team facility, with no limitations in terms of the types of throws he was able to make. The next step, McVay said that evening, was to take part in individual drills during practice the following Monday.

That day, McVay said that although Stafford “felt good,” he “didn’t feel good enough” to throw during practice. The Rams “didn’t think [practicing] was the right thing to do based on how he woke up feeling,” McVay said.

When asked his confidence level in Stafford being ready for the Rams’ season opener against the Houston Texans, McVay said, “I think that would be putting the cart way before the horse.”

“My job is to make sure [I] stay steady and even keeled,” McVay said. “No. 1 for Matthew, but for our group. And of course, you want him to feel as good as possible and be able to lead the way, but if the circumstances don’t allow that, then we have a lot of confidence in Jimmy [Garoppolo] and Stetson [Bennett] and our group as a whole.”
