What is Commanders WR Terry McLaurin’s fair market value?

What could a new contract look like for the Washington Commanders and wide receiver Terry McLaurin?

Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac joined the “Grant & Danny” show on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., on Thursday and broke down what a potential deal between the two sides could look like. Before we dive into Ginnitti’s thoughts, here’s a look at the three-year, $82.5 million proposed deal.

In this deal, McLaurin would receive a three-year extension, which would keep him in Washington through the 2028 season, when he will be 33 years old. It’s an average of $27.5 million per season, which may not sound like a win on McLaurin’s side, considering the numbers we’ve heard his side requested. However, $50 million would be guaranteed at signing, and it’s a stronger deal than what future Hall of Famer Mike Evans signed with the Buccaneers last year. Evans was a few months short of his 31st birthday when he signed the new deal.

“Yeah, so that’s actually his mathematical value within our structure, Ginnitti said. “So, the $27.5 has sort of been the number that we’ve been bouncing around internally here with him for a while. And you know, I know that counteracts with the $30 million plus that the other wide receivers around his age have been getting, and certainly what he’s been saying out loud, but that’s sort of where fair market value says he should be. And I think this late in the game with the team basically putting their foot down this long, that’s going to be the going rate, right? It’s not going to be an overextension at this point in time. It’s going to be all or nothing in terms of that fair market value price.”

That’s excellent insight. Although we don’t know the specifics of what either side is seeking, the information that has emerged suggests McLaurin was targeting the DK Metcalf contract. However, with Metcalf being over two years younger, that deal was not going to happen with Washington or anyone else.

It’s been asked if McLaurin has received bad advice from his agent throughout these talks. Remember, the agent works for him. If Spotrac has this as McLaurin’s fair market value, it’s believable to think NFL teams view this similarly.
