Detroit Lions say ‘thank God’ regular season is here after stinker

  • The Detroit Lions concluded their preseason with a flat loss against the Houston Texans
  • Coach Dan Campbell expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress and is optimistic about the upcoming season opener against the Green Bay Packers.

Dan Campbell is like just about everyone else in the NFL, ready for the regular season to begin.

“Thank God it’s here, almost,” Campbell said. “It’s time. It’s time to get ready for the season and this opener, get ready to go to Lambeau.”

The Detroit Lions closed the preseason with another clunker of a performance Saturday, losing to the Houston Texans, 26-7, in a game in which they sat every starter on both sides of the ball.

Backup quarterback Kyle Allen was a perfect 5-for-5 passing for 66 yards and threw a 33-yard touchdown to Isaac TeSlaa before giving way to Hendon Hooker in the second quarter.

Hooker and the rest of the Lions’ backups mostly failed to impress in their final tune-up before the team’s Sept. 7 season opener against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field – and in the last chance they had to sway decision makers before Tuesday’s cutdown to a 53-man roster.

Campbell said none of the Lions’ bubble players stood out as having a standout performance Saturday. Allen already was the heavy favorite to win the No. 2 quarterback job, and TeSlaa, a third-round pick, has had a strong training camp overall.

“I think there’s going to be a couple of areas where we have to decide what we want to do,” Campbell said. “I think most of it feels pretty good. We have a pretty good feel, pretty good idea. We know what the vision is for the player, where they belong, but there’ll be a couple that’ll be difficult.”

The Lions still are weighing whether to keep Hooker as their No. 3 quarterback or cut him and potentially bring him back on practice squad. Hooker was 6 of 11 passing for 70 yards Saturday with one interception.

He finished the preseason 22 of 40 passing (55%) for 187 yards with five turnovers (three interceptions, two lost fumbles) and no touchdowns. He led one scoring drive in 20 possessions this preseason.

“Look, I wish Hooker – and I know he does – would’ve had a better outing, but you have to take it with a grain of salt,” Campbell said. “It’s not like he was playing with our first O-Line out there, or first-team skill position, all of that. So you take that all into account as well. I thought he was prepared. I thought he was ready. Looked pretty calm, just circumstances didn’t work out today, that’s all.”

Among players who made a favorable impression Saturday, Jacob Saylors returned from an ankle injury to rush for 32 yards on nine carries and added a team-high three catches for 27 yards. Loren Strickland and Trevor Nowaske tied for the team-lead with nine tackles. And Tyson Russell picked off a bobbled pass for the Lions’ first interception of the preseason.

“I feel good,” Nowaske said. “I mean going into today that was the biggest thing. I know I’ve had a good camp and I just wanted to kind of close it out with a bang and I feel like I did that. And I felt like, yeah, there was some big plays out there. Obviously, we didn’t get the job done but I definitely feel like from an individual standpoint I did all right.”

Nowaske said he’s excited for what lies ahead in the regular season, and so is Campbell.

“I love where our team’s at,” Campbell said. “We just finished basically six weeks, five weeks of true work on the grass and we’ve gotten better and better every week on both sides of the ball. I feel like we’ve really progressed. We’ve gotten two different looks from other teams, too, Miami and Houston this week. And I just think we’ve gotten a variety of work, I think we’ve tested each other, I think we’ve grown from it and I think we’re going to be ready to go. I’m fired up right now, so we’re going to be good.”
