Florida football ranked No. 13 in ESPN’s updated FPI before Week 1

The 2025 college football season is here, and with it comes the first Football Power Index (FPI) update from ESPN. For Florida football, the numbers offer a realistic but still encouraging snapshot heading into Billy Napier’s fourth season in Gainesville.

The Florida Gators check in at No. 13 nationally in the latest FPI, moving up several spots from the summer rankings. The model projects the Gators to finish with about 7.2 wins and 4.9 losses, putting them in line for a quality bowl appearance but also showing just how difficult the path remains in the nation’s toughest conference.

So what exactly is FPI? It’s ESPN’s predictive rating system that measures team strength and projects performance for the rest of the season. The formula factors in things like returning starters, past results, recruiting talent and schedule strength, then runs 20,000 simulations to estimate a team’s chances at winning its division, conference or even making the College Football Playoff.

From fringe contender to climbing higher

Back in June, Florida was slotted at No. 18 in the initial FPI rankings, with ESPN even giving the Gators a surprising 14.5% chance to make the College Football Playoff despite the strength of schedule.

That first look at Florida in the FPI picture framed the Gators as a fringe playoff contender if DJ Lagway and company could grind out seven or more wins.

Now, sitting five spots higher at No. 13 before Week 1, the Gators are still outside the CFP favorites—but they’ve clearly gained some respect nationally. Florida has an 86.6% chance to reach bowl eligibility and a slim but noteworthy shot (32.7%) at sneaking into the playoff picture if it can take down heavyweights like the Texas Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs.

The math is clear: the Gator may not be favored to win the SEC, but the pieces are there for another step forward. If Napier’s group can capitalize on a couple of big swing games, Florida football could turn these projections into something far bigger come December.
