Joe Mixon won’t be ready to go in Week 1 when the Houston Texans take on the Los Angeles Rams in two weeks.
He might not be ready to go until midway through the 2025 season.
The Texans announced on Monday afternoon that they will place their Pro Bowl running back on the reserve/non-football injury list at 3 p.m. Tuesday, when NFL teams must cut their rosters to 53 players. Mixon will miss at least four games, making his earliest return date on Oct. 5 when the Texans travel to M&T Bank Stadium to take on the Baltimore Ravens.
The moves seemed expected after Texans coach DeMeco Ryans declined to comment on the status of Mixon when asked about the roster on Monday.
“We’re still working through some things collectively with myself and Nick (Caserio),” Ryans said. “Still working through it, and still a lot of decisions to be made here.”
Mixon, who became the first Texans’ running back since Carlos Hyde in 2019 to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season, had been dealing with a lower leg injury he suffered earlier this offseason. After a Pro Bowl campaign last fall, Mixon didn’t participate in offseason team activities and missed every training camp practice and preseason game.
When camp broke last month, Mixon was placed on the non-football injury list. He was expected to miss a majority, if not all of training camp, though initial reports figured that the former Bengals star would be back no later than after Week 1.
Last season, the 29-year-old rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns while helping Houston secure a second straight AFC South division title.
While the Texans will miss Mixon to begin the season, Ryans’ approval of former four-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb should be a serviceable option to take over as the top option while the former star is sidelined.
“I’ve seen him just continue to grow and get better,” Ryans said of Chubb. “Once we put the pads on, it was like, ‘Wow, this is the Chubb that I remember.’ Physical, downhill player. And you see him popping some runs, you see he still has the explosion and the speed that it takes to make plays in this league.”
The Texans also have Woody Marks, Dare Ogunbowale and Dameon Pierce as secondary options to begin the regular season, if not someone else who makes the active roster.
