These Are the Only Low-Rise Jeans I'll Actually Wear

Editors’ Picks are the Fashionista team’s true (#notspon) fashion and beauty obsessions, handpicked by professionals who see it all.

I — like many of my fellow millennials who weathered the horrors and regrets of the one-inch-fly era of the early aughts — have tried like hell to steer clear of the low-rise trend this time around. But the resurgence of the need-to-book-a-bikini-wax denim style has been going strong for a few years now, especially when worn in a baggy silhouette. I’ve surprised myself by finally coming around on it, having officially fallen victim to the Siren song of one specific style: Still Here New York’s Cool Jeans.

This slouchy, relaxed-leg style has been a viral hit for the brand, selling out multiple times and even inspiring a spinoff into shorts. After trying them, I totally get why: The aptly named jeans do indeed make me feel cool when I wear them, and I’ve found them to be far more versatile than I expected. The rise is decidedly low, but not in a Christina Aguilera-circa-2003 way. (The button fly is at least three inches long, in my estimation.) And where other low-rise jeans may gap, pinch or be otherwise uncomfortable and difficult to wear, these avoid those pitfalls with the inclusion of an adjustable drawstring that’s as useful as it is cute.

As Fashionista noted this year, comfy drawstring jeans are having a moment. (I also seem to be drawn to corded items lately — maybe I’m feeling untethered? *Adds to notes app to discuss with therapist.*) The cord on Still Here’s jeans is fastened with a small metal disc, for a bit of simple built-in accessorizing. It’s also deeply necessary, since the jeans technically have no waistband. But they don’t need one! It’s all part of the vibe.

Made from the brand’s 100% cotton “Cloud” denim, which it claims to be “the softest denim in the world,” the Cool Jean is meant to be airy and lightweight, which makes them wearable even in the summer. My favorite wash is classic blue (shown above), but the white ones (which feature a beige drawstring cord) are also super cute, and the red colorway (“brick”) would be fun for someone who wears more color than I do.

August is prime fall wardrobe assessment/denim stock-up time in my household (back-to-school shopping nostalgia, anyone?), so I’d suggest nabbing a pair of these now, before they sell out again.
