SGA seen as all-time best OKC player

The NBA is on a collective vacation. It’s the slowest part of the year with zero news for two months. That said, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Training camp kicks off in a little over a month. Before you know it, the 2025-26 regular season will start as the gravy train moves along.

The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to enjoy their NBA championship. They had one of the greatest seasons ever with a 68-14 regular-season record and a Larry O’Brien trophy. It’s been a quiet offseason as they will run it back with mostly the same roster.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren all signed contract extensions this past offseason to keep them in OKC for the foreseeable future. To reflect on their championship run and look forward to their repeat chances, Thunder Wire conducted a 16-question fan survey.

A total of 617 Thunder fans participated in the survey. One of the questions was about Gilgeous-Alexander’s all-time status on the Thunder after he won the MVP and a championship in one season. Is he the greatest and best Thunder player ever?

There have always been semantics involved with both titles. Kevin Durant may be the best Thunder player ever, but Russell Westbrook is the greatest as he holds most franchise records. But with Gilgeous-Alexander delivering a championship, that nuance is no longer required.

According to most OKC fans, Gilgeous-Alexander is the best and greatest Thunder player ever. 613 voters answered the yes-or-no question, with an overwhelming 90.2% saying yes. That’s what happens when you’re the best player on one of the best teams ever. The scary part is, the 27-year-old is in the midst of his prime.

With Gilgeous-Alexander on the Thunder for at least the rest of the 2020s, he’ll have plenty of time to shatter franchise records. He’s ascended into one of the NBA’s best players. Three straight 30-plus point campaigns, married with three straight top-five MVP finishes, put him in special company.
