Commanders assign new numbers for 2025 NFL season

The Washington Commanders finalized their 53-man roster on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it was all about the practice squad. A new season also means new numbers.

Five players on Washington’s 2025 roster picked new numbers. Here are the new jersey numbers:

  • QB Marcus Mariota: No. 8
  • S Tyler Owens: No. 18
  • T George Fant: No. 77
  • TE Colson Yankoff: No. 80
  • DT Javon Kinlaw: No. 99

Here’s the official announcement from the Commanders.

Of the number changes, three are with Washington for their second season in 2025, while Fant was signed earlier this month. Kinlaw was Washington’s top free-agent signing in March and had been wearing the No. 52, which looked a bit odd on the 6-foot-5, 320-pound defensive tackle. When the Commanders released defensive end Clelin Ferrell this week, the No. 99 jersey became available. Kinlaw wore No. 99 with the San Francisco 49ers.

Mariota initially chose No. 0. However, he gave that number to cornerback Mike Sainristil and wore No. 18 last season. Now, Mariota is back in the jersey number he wore during his record-breaking career at Oregon and in all but two of his 10 NFL seasons. The No. 8 became free when the Commanders traded running back Brian Robinson Jr. last week.

Owens and Yankoff were both undrafted free agents in 2024 and made the roster last season. Owens wore No. 40 and is now back in the jersey number he wore at Texas Tech. Yankoff now looks like a tight end with the No. 80 jersey. He previously wore No. 41.

The Commanders open the season against the New York Giants on Sept. 7 at Northwest Stadium.
