Adam Peters and Dan Quinn evaluate the Commanders’ 53-man roster.

Don’t get too comfortable with the Washington Commanders’ current 53-man roster.

Wednesday, Commanders GM Adam Peters, when asked about potential roster changes before the season opener on September 7 against the NY Giants, replied, “It’s always really fluid and you never know what opportunities will come up, in terms of players and whatnot.”

Peters showed this in his first season as Commanders GM when he went out and found WR Noah Brown, who the Houston Texans had just released. He also signed Sheldon Day, an unrestricted free agent who had been with the Vikings. Another “surprise” was that he signed LB Nick Bellore to play exclusively special teams. Each of those moves was made between the initial 53-man roster and opening day.

Yet, Peters added, “I can say that we’re thrilled with the guys we have and we are so pumped up with this team and we feel on paper this team is stronger than we had last year.” Indeed, the Commanders on paper appear stronger on both offensive and defensive lines. They also appear deeper in the defensive backfield and offensive backfield.

However, Peters understands better than we do that no NFL game is won on paper. “That means nothing until we start playing the games. But we have so much confidence in the guys in that locker room and we’re just getting started.”

Peters has put in the work. He has imagined and strategized what players this team needs to improve upon weaknesses in the 2024 team. He is more invested than any of us. “I’m really, really like super-pumped with those guys and really excited to see ’em on the field against the [New York] Giants. I think having everybody out on that field is going to be really, really cool and exciting.”

Head coach Dan Quinn then wanted to insist that though they like the players they have, he found it difficult to make some of the cuts they had to make to get to the required 53 players on Tuesday.

“We love where we landed, but there were some really tough calls and hard, and that’s what you want it to be, where it’s competitive and, where you can’t sleep and we’re talking at night and talking in the morning. And so, like, as hard as that is, that’s a great thing because that it’s not so cut and dry easy.”
