Academy Sports To Open 11 New Stores in Q3: Here’s Where They Are

Academy Sports + Outdoors is not slowing down on its store opening strategy.

On Thursday, the Katy, Texas-based retailer said that it has opened three new locations in Boardman, Ohio; Beaufort, S.C.; and Virginia Beach, Va., so far this quarter. Eight more stores are set to open in the fall in Rome, Ga.; Cullman, Ala.; Mishawaka, Ind.; Lakeland, Fla.; Columbia, Tenn.; Albany, Ga.; Palestine, Tex.; and Batesville, Miss. In total, the new store openings will create more than 650 new jobs across 10 states.

In June, Academy also opened locations in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Midlothian, Va.; and Morgantown, W. Va. The new doors are in addition to the retailer’s first stores in Pennsylvania and Maryland during the first quarter. The company has plans to open a total of 20 to 25 new locations this fiscal year.

The full-line sporting goods and outdoor recreation retailer said that each location will celebrate its grand opening with exclusive deals, giveaways, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and experiences for the whole family. As part of Academy’s ongoing commitment to making a positive impact in the communities it serves, each new store opening will be marked by meaningful donations and charitable initiatives.

To support the new store openings in Boardman, Beaufort and Virginia Beach, Academy partnered with local community and nonprofit organizations — including Boardman Township Park, Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation, and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry — to host donation shopping sprees for local youth, during which Academy provided back-to-school gear and experiences.

“We’re excited to continue bringing the Academy experience to even more communities across the country this fall,” Eric Friederich, senior vice president of retail operations at Academy Sports + Outdoors, said in a statement. “Each location represents our commitment to helping active families have fun with the best quality products and the top brands at everyday market-leading value — whether they’re gearing up for the game, the outdoors, or the adventures of everyday life.”

The company plans to release its second quarter earnings report on Sept. 2.

Academy’s first quarter earnings results missed Wall Street’s expectations for both adjusted diluted earnings per share (EPS) and revenue.

For the three months ended May 3, Academy reported a 39.7 percent decline in net income to $46.1 million, or 68 cents a diluted share, from net income of 76.5 million, or $1.01, in the same year-ago quarter. The company said adjusted diluted EPS was 76 cents for the period. Net sales slipped 0.9 percent to $1.35 billion from $1.64 billion, while comparable sales fell 3.7 percent. Wall Street was expecting EPS of 89 cents on revenue of $1.37 billion.
