Commanders fans: Beware of AI

Washington Commanders fans, beware of AI.

If you are like me, you have been told ad nauseam about the internet progress that is AI, and how it is superior to the Google searching you have been doing for years. Well, as Lee Corso said for decades on College Game Day, “Not so fast, my friend.”

Recently, I have noticed a few errors in what appears on my screen as “AI Overview.” Another example occurred Monday, when I typed in, “How many times have Washington and the New York Giants met on opening week? You won’t believe me if I tell you how bad the AI response was, so how about I simply copy and paste? Here goes:

AI Overview

Washington and the Nnew York Giants have met on opening day of the NFL season at least twice, with one opening week matchup in 2024 where the Giants defeated Washington, and another in 2020 where Washington beat the Giants.

Note: The Commanders’ team name changed from the Redskins to Washington in 2020.

EACH STATEMENT IN THE ABOVE AI RESPONSE WAS INCORRECT

Let’s look at each of these individually, with our own memories, not even needing the memory of online resources:

  • “Washington and New York have met at least twice on opening day.” What a joke! Both teams are in the NFC East, and I, having followed the Redskins since the 1969 season, know this is not accurate information without looking it up online. For instance, many of you, like me, recall the 2011 season opener against the Giants when Ryan Kerrigan had a pick-six in the Redskins victory. Some of you may remember Billy Kilmer getting knocked out of a season opener with a bloody nose, then returning for a late-drive Redskins win.
  • “Opening week matchup in 2024.” No, the Commanders traveled to Tampa, losing to the Bucs on opening day last year. The Giants then came to Washington in Week 2, and Washington won on seven field goals.
  • “In 2020, Washington defeated the NY Giants on opening week.” No, they did not! Many of you will recall that the 2020 season opener wasn’t even against the Giants. It was Ron Rivera’s first game as Washington’s head coach, and Washington defeated the Philadelphia Eagles.

  • The team name changed from Redskins to Washington in 2020.” No, it changed from “Redskins” to “Football Team.”

So, be careful, Commanders fans. When you desire to read about the Commanders or Redskins history, you don’t want to simply settle for an “AI Overview” because they are sometimes not only wrong, they are extremely inaccurate.
