At the Venice Film Festival, it’s typically the extravagant gowns that command the red carpet spotlight, but this weekend a pared-back denim look stole the show. Julia Roberts and Amanda Seyfried turned heads when they appeared at separate photo calls wearing the same Versace outfit just two days apart. Of course, the twinning moment was no coincidence — stylist Elizabeth Stewart revealed that Amanda Seyfried borrowed Roberts’ look, writing “sharing is caring” and highlighting the sustainability of it all. And while red carpet outfit swaps may be a more eco-conscious practice, they’re also inherently news-worthy — which served as a prime (and much-talked-about) opportunity to debut the first red carpet look of newly-appointed Versace creative director Dario Vitale.
Earlier this year, Donatella Versace announced her departure as creative director of Versace, naming Dario Vitale, formerly Miu Miu’s ready-to-wear design director, as her successor. On Friday, Roberts offered the first glimpse of Vitale’s vision for the house in a navy blazer with a slightly oversized cut, layered over a striped button-down casually unbuttoned and pushed up at the sleeves. Paired with dark-wash denim and a black leather belt with gold hardware, the look struck a balance between effortless ease and polished sophistication. After seeing Roberts in the look on her stylist’s Instagram, Seyfried commented, “Please let me wear the same outfit” (which is understandable, because that was also my same reaction).

The red carpet borrowing moment may have been a well-orchestrated sneak peek of what’s to come at Vitale’s Versace, but it also delivered major inspo for a perfect summer-to-fall transitional outfit. As the last remaining days of summer lead us into fall fashion, Roberts and Seyfried’s Versace look is a master class in easing your wardrobe into cooler temps with three key pieces: an oversized blazer, a button-down shirt, and belted straight-leg jeans.
The Blazer
When the forecast calls for a light jacket, but it’s not quite cool enough to reach for your favorite trench, a blazer serves as the ultimate pick that can take you from the office to drink and drinks. As the actress’ shared Versace ensemble proves: the key is in the silhouette — a slightly oversized fit allows for prime fall layering, while the pronounced broad shoulders deliver just the right touch of modernized ’80s Working Girl energy. The cherry on top to take the effortless chic styling up a notch? Rolling up the blazer and shirt sleeves à la Roberts and Seyfried’s shared look.

The Button-Down Shirt
Button-down shirts are a year-round wardrobe staple, but they’re an effortless shirting essential when it comes to transitional dressing. Tapping into fall’s preppy trend, the collared shirt feels fresh in a striped style, whether you opt for trending butter yellow and brown hues as spotted on Roberts and Seyfried, or some of the season’s alternative must-have hues, from burgundy to blue.

The Dark Indigo Jeans
As for the jeans, there’s no better time to give your denim collection a refresh than fall. Dark wash indigo jeans are trending this season, and the actress’ straight-leg style showcases just how polished the wash can look in a sleek, high-waisted cut.
